Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman gave Trump the royal treatment and broke protocol by personally greeting President Trump on the tarmac at Riyadh airport, rather than sending a lower-ranking royal as is customary. President Trump received a horse escort as his motorcade arrived at the Saudi Royal Court in Riyadh.
The obligatory President Musk was in attendance. Prince Mohammad bin Salman looked confused, not wanting to make a deal with the wrong president.
Presidents Trump & Musk are in Saudi Arabia for a four-day trip that also includes stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. During his visit, Trump is focusing on securing significant new investments in the US from Gulf states, particularly from their state-backed sovereign wealth funds.
BlackRock CEO Larry Fink is among the business leaders accompanying Trump to Saudi Arabia, along with CEOs from Citigroup, IBM, Qualcomm, Alphabet, and Franklin Templeton. They spoke at the Saudi-US Investment Forum on May 13 in Riyadh, which coincides with Trump's arrival in the kingdom and meetings with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The visit resulted in agreements that could bring billions of dollars in investments to the United States international hedge funds and tech companies. Executives from BlackRock, Palantir, Blackstone, Citigroup, Qualcomm, and IBM were also in attendance for the investment summit.
WE LIKE EACH OTHER A LOT
Trump was overhead by White House reporters calling the Saudi crown prince a “friend,” and saying he believes they have developed a good relationship. In world politics, a “friend” is an enemy you make deals with in order to screw your other mutual enemies. Just wanted to clear that up.
“I really believe we like each other a lot,” Trump was heard saying.
The White House reporters add that the US president also recalled visiting Saudi Arabia in 2017 during his first term in office. He told MBS that investment from the Gulf nation would help create jobs in the US.
Trump and MBS signed a “strategic partnership agreement” between the two countries. “Strategic partnership” means the Americans sell them weapons and Saudi uses them to blow up Yemen.
Next stop will be Qatar, where Trump will get to thank the leadership personally for bribing gifting a 13-year old plane (with maintenance issues) to the US government.
The gift isn’t really a gift though—it’s a temporary loaner.
“I would never be one to turn down that kind of an offer,” he said Monday. “I mean, I could be a stupid person and say, ‘No, we don’t want a free, very expensive airplane.’ But it was—I thought it was a great gesture.”
In an earlier statement, a Qatari spokesman said it would be “inaccurate” to refer to the plane as a gift. He said the transfer of an aircraft for “temporary use” was under discussion between the two countries.
Qatar is said to be offering a version of a Boeing 747-8, a much newer model that has been upgraded into a “flying palace.” The ultra-luxurious Boeing 747-8 private jet, owned by the Qatar royal family, features a master bedroom and a guest bedroom on the upper deck, each with its own en suite bathroom and shower.
From a report in the New York Times Intelligencer:
Used infrequently by the royal family, the BribeJet has so far only accumulated about 1,000 hours, meaning it was flown only two hours per week, on average. According to Bloomberg, its interior was outfitted in “creamy white and tan furnishings, rugs, and artwork,” by the fabled Parisian interior design firm of Cabinet Albert Pinto, which accented the décor with “custom-made Tai Ping rugs, sycamore, and wacapou wood fixtures, and artwork by Alexander Calder.” According to a prospectus circulated when the aircraft was put up for sale in 2020, it features a master bedroom and a guest bedroom tucked into the 747’s upper deck, each with its own en suite bathroom and shower. As with any custom decoration, the aircraft was outfitted to the particular tastes and needs of the then-owner, which may not match the tastes of subsequent buyers. Among the accessories listed in the prospectus is “oven goat,” whatever that is.
TRUMP’S SAUDI BITCOIN CONNECTIONS
Trump’s newest bitcoin fiasco is the latest brazen move by the president to continue enriching himself and his family, while conducting national affairs with foreign powers.
American Bitcoin is majority-owned by Hut 8, a company whose major shareholders include BlackRock, Vanguard, and Coatue Management. Coatue, in turn, receives funding from Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund through its venture arm, Sanabil. Jeff Bezos and Michael Dell's companies also dump money into Coatue.
American Bitcoin is co-founded by Eric Trump, the family’s third crypto operation, all backed by foreign sources, and represents complex conflicts of interests.
Sanabil Investments is overseen by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which is Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Amnesty International have called out the Saudi investment group for human rights violations. Saudi Arabia jailed two tribesmen for 50 years for refusing to be kicked off their own land, to make way for the construction of a mega city, called NEOM.
Two members of the Howeitat, a tribe in Saudi Arabia were forcibly displaced to make way for the $500 billion Neom megacity, and they received lengthy sentences over their protests against the project.
Abdulilah al-Howeiti and his relative, Abdullah Dukhail al-Howeiti, were both handed a 50-year prison term and 50-year travel ban for supporting their family's refusal to be forcibly evicted from their homes in the Tabuk province of northwestern Saudi Arabia. Around 20,000 people are expected to be forcibly relocated. Members of the Howeitat tribe have been killed resisting evictions, including Abdul Rahim al-Huwaiti who was killed by Saudi security forces under disputed circumstances. Three other members of the tribe were also sentenced to death for resisting evictions.
$600 BILLION GOLDEN AGE DEAL
The Trump administration released details of a massive $600 billion deal that includes $142 billion in defense contracts with over a dozen US weapons manufacturers. Calling Trump the “dealmaker in chief” the release states:
The deals celebrated today are historic and transformative for both countries and represent a new golden era of partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
Underscoring our commitment to strengthening our defense and security partnership, the United States and Saudi Arabia signed the largest defense sales agreement in history—nearly $142 billion, providing Saudi Arabia with state-of-the-art warfighting equipment and services from over a dozen U.S. defense firms.
Also at the top of the list are a $20 billion pledge from Saudi data infrastructure leader DataVolt to develop AI data centers and energy infrastructure throughout the United States. In addition, US tech giants like Google, Oracle, Salesforce, AMD, and Uber, will jointly invest $80 billion alongside Saudi partners to drive innovation in emerging technologies across both nations.
Nothing says “golden age” quite like shiploads of weapons and AI data centers.
